Managing Your Cholesterol During the Holidays

Ho Ho Ho!  The Holidays are here which means, for most of us, stringing up multicolored lights, decorating the house, watching the snow fall, and sharing with family the indulgences of homemade warm cinnamon rolls, sweet tea breads, and pumpkin pies.  But many years of overindulging in too many calories, sugar, and fat can also mean putting on the pounds and for some who suffer from high cholesterol the extra pounds and rich high-fat foods puts them more at risk of heart attacks and strokes.  High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) affects an estimated 26 percent of American adults, according to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III carried out from 1988-1991. It is also more common in those who are obese, a condition that has now reached epidemic proportions in the United States, affecting as much as half of the adult population.

Super-Foods that Help You Weather the Winter Months

'Tis the time of year when change of seasons and crisp cool air bring with them the familiar dry coughs and nagging aches and pains of the flu (technically known as influenza). The flu is a viral infection that attacks the respiratory tract. Flu symptoms are usually more severe than those of the common cold, and may include fever, headache, sore throat, sneezing and runny, stuffy nose, loss of appetite, muscle soreness, general weakness, and sometimes nausea or vomiting. The flu typically lasts one to two weeks. If left untreated, the flu can lead to life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, especially among the elderly, women who are pregnant, or people with chronic illnesses. Flu epidemics cause an average of 20,000 deaths each year in the United States.

Finding Hope

“I woke up and they told me I had an colostomy bag and they told me that I had cancer all in my stomach.”

Those were the haunting words Sheila West-Yorek heard from her doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in November, 2003. The cancer was a result of new tumors that had grown on her ovaries and metastasized to her stomach. The cruel irony of this is that her once healthy ovaries had received preventative radiation treatments during a bout with cervical cancer eleven years before, and now her worst fears were realized.

Alternative Therapies for Cancer under Attack

Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship... To restrict the art of healing to one class of men and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic and have no place in a republic...The Constitution of this republic should make a special privilege for medical freedom..."
-Benjamin Rush, M.D.

Breast Cancer Survivor's Maintenance Regimen

Recurrence, by cancer definition, is the return of cancer after the removal of the tumor, at the same location or in a new location, months or years after the cancer was first removed.

World Renowned Oncologist, Dr. James Forsythe explains the major cause of recurrence. “The reason why the cancer appears again is that before the removal of the cancer, cells from the malignant tumor traveled to a new location through the circulatory and/or lymphatic system. These cells then grow and spread, then undetected by the doctor, even after the original tumor is removed.“ This is not always the case for cancer subjects, but each and every patient runs his or her own risk at contracting cancer again

The Myth behind the Required Daily Allowance

“It is really unfortunate when even vitamins and essential minerals are either condemned by the AMA and even the FDA as either placebo pills or in some cases dangerous drugs.  The patient’s options of healthcare are being cruelly limited.” –James Wm. Forsythe, MD, HMD

Most people know that taking vitamins and minerals is good for their health. But did you know that there are more than 20,000 studies in the National Library of Medicine documenting the increased health benefits of vitamins and some essential minerals when taken at higher levels than the U.S. government Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs)?

Take charge of your Arthritis

If you or someone you love struggles with joint pain, stiffness, and/or inflammation, arthritis pain may be the cause. Suffering from arthritis can make routine activities such as household chores, getting out of the bed in the morning, or even writing a letter increasingly strenuous.

It is a common misconception that arthritis is just an old-person's disease. It affects nearly 21 million Americans of all ages, gender, and race, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). There are over 100 types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, spondylarthropathies, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma.  The common denominator for all these conditions is joint and musculoskeletal pain, which is why they are grouped together as 'arthritis.' Often that pain is a result of inflammation of the joint lining.

Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics

The overuse of antibiotics is rampant, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Current estimates show that two million people acquire bacterial infections in US hospitals each year and 90,000 die as a result. With 110 million courses of antibiotics being prescribed each year, antibiotic-resistance has spread globally at an alarming rate and continues to increase. Some studies show that more than 70 percent of ailments for which antibiotics are prescribed are viral in nature; meaning an antibiotic treatment does little good.
